If you watch a few romantic comedies and believe your love story will play out the same way, we hate to break it to you, but it’s probably not going to happen like it happens in the movies. If you really want to find a soul mate, you’re going to have to give up your Hollywood expectations of who and how your Mr. Right will come into your life.

Here at South Jersey Matchmakers, we know how rom-coms can quickly ruin relationships. If your love life isn’t all you hope for it to be, let us show you how watching romantic movies can trick you into having unrealistic expectations about men.

1. They’re all super attractive.

Yes, we can definitely agree that romantic movies cast nothing but attractive characters. In almost every movie, the main character is a very handsome guy. It’s usually Ryan Gosling, Channing Tatum, or some other drop-dead gorgeous movie star swooping in and sweeping a woman off her feet. However, thinking that you’re going to find a Greek god is unrealistic. You can’t expect to find your Mr. Perfect like every woman does in the movies.

2. Everyone has six pack abs and big muscles.

There’s no way around it, two-thirds of Americans are overweight, and that’s a true fact. The average weight of a man is 195 pounds. However, you won’t find those numbers in rom-coms because all the actors have ripped six pack abs and big muscles. If you think your soul mate is going to have a six pack and larger than life muscles, you have another thing coming.

3. They’re all very chivalrous.

In the movies, men open car doors, pull out chairs, and let you order first. Lol if you think this is going to happen in the real world. This doesn’t mean there aren’t any chivalrous guys out there, but thanks to Tinder and other dating apps, chivalry is almost extinct. Men don’t feel the need to do these things for a woman anymore. Some say it’s because women are asking for equality, which is the reason they even make women pay for half the date.

4. They’re always rich.

A lot of rom-com characters happen to be wealthy—wearing nice suits, driving fancy cars, and living in nice homes. They also treat their woman to upscale restaurants and pay for all the dates. In real life, however, you can’t expect to end up with a millionaire who is going to wine and dine you all over town. If you happen to be a successful woman, then you might even make more than him.

5. They’re always spontaneous with romance.

Very few men today are capable of being spontaneous as far as date ideas. Most men today have no clue how to even plan a romantic date. Picnics in the park are almost extinct because men today only care about taking you to the bedroom (again, thanks to Tinder). So don’t be disappointed if the men you meet in the real world aren’t as romantic as Channing Tatum. It just isn’t in their genetics.

6. They’re all great mind readers.

It is really unfair that women expect men to know what they’re thinking and what they want. Men rarely even know what they want. Most of the time men struggle to figure women out. So if you think the man in your life is going to be able to read your mind like characters in rom-coms do, then you’re in for a very rude awakening. Men aren’t just going to click and understand you like the characters in your favorite romantic movies.

No one is saying that you have to stop watching romantic movies, but stop thinking that your love life is going to play out like one. Believe us, it’s only going to lead to disappointment.
