Man pleading with his wife after a fight

Do you feel like your relationship is spiraling downwards? It is really tricky to find out what is really going wrong in your relationship sometimes. As SJ matchmakers with over 30 years in the New Jersey dating industry, we know there could be many things happening. But there are some common categories that these issues fall into. Unknowingly, women usually self-sabotage their relationships due to simple mistakes they make.

Today, our SJ matchmakers are going to reveal the biggest mistakes women make in new relationships. Take notes and avoid making these mistakes in your own relationship.

1. Trying to Control Everything

As we already know, there isn’t a perfect relationship out there. But people want that once-in-a-lifetime love, that fairy-tale ending. In turn, many women try to control the situation and attempt to mold their guy into that Prince Charming they think he should be… even if it just clearly not going to end up working out that way.

We can’t control destiny of if a person chooses to ask you on date. We can control how we present ourselves to others, how we react to things that are good or bad, how we show care for loved ones, and how we move on after the relationship ends.

2. Only Being in It for One Thing

Relationships bring so much: a friend to hang out with, a chance to get dressed up on the weekends, an excuse to leave a party early, a reason to splurge at a new upscale restaurant, and many other bonuses that we expect in a relationship. Yes, those benefits are wonderful, and they can be a huge part of a relationship.

An all-too-common mistake, though, is wanting to be with a guy just for those perks. That isn’t good at all. There needs to be more than just physical attraction and a longing for relationship perks to keep a relationship going. If not, it is a recipe for disaster.

3. Making Excuses

In any relationship, we may notice certain habits of this other person that are not ideal. But this person is so attractive, and we have so much fun together, so, well, we just ignore all that other stuff. Where are we going with this? Well, another common mistake women are known for making in a new relationship is wearing blinders and making excuses to be with a man, despite all the flaws.

It’s important not to overlook flaws you know are deal breakers for you. Save yourself the hassle and heartbreak by not getting involved with someone you know isn’t right for you.

4. Not Defining the Relationship

Ah, the dreaded talk… What are we? What do we tell people when they start asking questions? When are we going to make the relationship public? Everyone has unique thoughts when it comes to defining a relationship, but it sort of has to happen at some point.

Blurred lines, unclear expectations, and being on different pages can quickly destroy the relationship. This will often cause fights and disagreements. One partner will end up having hurt feelings and resentment. So, in order to avoid all of that, just have the talk with him, be real with each other, and either go at it together or walk away.
