They always start out a little awkward. But if you’re lucky, you’ll both loosen up fast, sparks will fly, and you’ll be well on your way to a second date. Ah, if it were only that easy, right? As Jersey matchmakers, we know that single women in NJ face a lot of first date obstacles and fears. But we’re here to ease your nerves and help you have a successful dating life.

Today, our dating experts here at South Jersey Matchmakers are going to share the best first date tips for women. These tips will get you through your upcoming first dates with ease.

1. Know why you’re dating to begin with.

That’s right, the first thing you need to do in order to have a successful first date is to know why you’re dating in the first place.

What is your relationship goal of dating? Are you looking for a committed relationship? Do you just want to keep things casual? Are you dating just to meet new people in the area? Do you want companionship or a deep connection?

Once you can honestly answer these questions, you can interact with your date in a way that aligns with your dating goals. This will make everything clear in your mind and your date’s.

2. Relax and have a good time.

Before you even leave your house for your first date, decide that you are going to have a great time.

Dating is a long process. Each time you meet a new guy, you are learning more and more about yourself and what you want in a partner.

Even if the date doesn’t lead to a second one, if you have a positive attitude and decide to have fun, you have nothing to lose.

3. Keep the date short.

You want to leave your date wanting more – not wondering if the date will ever come to an end. Leave on a high note and don’t let your date run out of steam.

You’re simply going out for a little bit to meet someone new. This isn’t about sharing your entire life story. Keep the date short and sweet. Start out meeting over coffee or drinks. You can either extend the first date or plan a longer date for next time if you hit it off.

4. Compliment him.

If you notice something that you like about him, say it. Complimenting him on his smile or taste in clothes is a great way to start the first date. If you like his cologne, let him know. Everyone deserves to know that they are being appreciated, especially when nerves are running high on a first date.

But make sure you’re using the right phrase. A little finesse goes a long way. Avoid complimenting him on things like his sexy biceps. It comes off a little tacky, which is the opposite of what you want to do. You don’t want him to get the wrong impression.

5. Be present.

This means putting your phone away, not sitting it on the table so you can look at your messages. Stay fully engaged in the conversation and keep your phone on tucked away and on “silent.”

You also need to stay self-ware and really listen to what he is saying. Nod in agreement and ask questions to show that you’re truly listening and interested in what he’s saying on the date.

On another note: if you’re nervous, don’t obsessively wonder about how the night is going. Neither of you knows the answer to this question yet, but you need to be fully present and enjoy the date while it’s happening. You have all night to wonder afterwards.

Having a successful first date isn’t as hard as you might think. It’s all about being prepared, containing your nerves, showing good manners, and being yourself.
